Schlein accuses Government of Right-Wing Extremism
Elly Schlein, leader of the Italian Democratic party, delivered a sharp critique of the current Italian government during her speech at the Party of European Socialists (PES) Congress. Schlein asserted that the governing coalition, which she characterized as “extreme right,” is implementing austerity measures that negatively impact public services like healthcare and education, and obstructing proposals for a national minimum wage.
She further claimed the government prioritizes “propaganda, hatred and polarization,” referencing a recent statement by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Florence where Meloni reportedly equated the opposition to Hamas. Schlein expressed solidarity with journalist Paolo Ranucci, who was the victim of an attack, arguing that freedom and democracy are jeopardized by the presence of the far-right in power.
Schlein emphasized the importance of a distinct socialist approach to counter the far-right. She stated that simply adopting the far-right’s agenda would be ineffective, and instead called for a renewed focus on defending rights and promoting social justice. “We must remember who we are as socialists,” she added.
Meloni Responds with Strong condemnation
Prime Minister Meloni swiftly and forcefully rejected schlein’s accusations. In a social media post, Meloni labeled Schlein’s statements as “pure delirium” and accused her of spreading falsehoods and damaging Italy’s reputation internationally. She shared a news article headlined “Democracy in Italy in danger” alongside her rebuke, highlighting the severity of her disagreement.
