“The attacker attempted suicide in a nearby emergency room after fleeing the school, but was stopped and arrested by police,” local media reported.
The injured children were rushed to various hospitals in Zagreb. The teacher and one student remain in critical condition in intensive care.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating that authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“I am deeply disturbed by this horrific event,” Plenković said at the start of a government session. “several children have been transported to hospitals across Zagreb.”
School attacks are rare in Croatia. This tragedy follows a similar incident in May, when a teenage gunman opened fire at a school in Belgrade, Serbia, killing nine students and a security guard.
Interview: Understanding School Violence After Zagreb tragedy
Newsdicrectory3.com: Today we’re joined by Dr. Ana Marija Horvat,a leading child psychologist specializing in trauma and violence,to shed light on the recent school attack in Zagreb and discuss broader concerns about school safety.Dr. Horvat, thank you for joining us.
Dr. Horvat: It’s a pleasure to be here, although under such tragic circumstances.
Newsdicrectory3.com: this attack has deeply shaken the community. What are your initial thoughts on the psychological impact this incident will have on young children, teachers, and families?
Dr.Horvat: This event is a shocking violation of the safety and innocence that we expect in a school environment. Children, in particular, will likely experience a range of emotions – fear, confusion, anxiety, and even survivor’s guilt. Teachers and parents will be grappling with their own trauma while trying to support the children in their care.
Newsdicrectory3.com: How can communities best address the emotional and psychological needs of those affected by this tragedy?
Dr. Horvat: There’s a clear need for immediate and long-term support. This includes providing access to mental health professionals trained to deal with trauma in children and adults. Schools should create a safe space for open dialog and emotional expression. remember, recovery is a process, not an event.
Newsdicrectory3.com: This attack tragically resonates with the recent school shooting in Serbia. Are there any lessons learned from that event that could be applied here?
Dr. Horvat: Both events highlight the vulnerability of schools to violence and the need for comprehensive prevention strategies. While it’s critically important to avoid simplistic answers, a multi-pronged approach is crucial. This involves strengthening mental health support systems, addressing bullying and isolation, fostering a culture of empathy and respect, and implementing robust security measures without creating an environment of fear.
Newsdicrectory3.com: This is a complex issue with no easy solutions. What message would you like to leave our readers with today?
Dr. Horvat: It’s vital to remember that these events are rare, but their impact is devastating. We must work together, as individuals, communities, and nations, to create a world where our children feel safe and supported, both inside and outside the classroom.
Newsdicrectory3.com: Dr. Horvat, thank you for sharing your valuable insights during this difficult time.
