Schweinfurt’s Theater der Stadt is offering a diverse program throughout February, despite some sold-out performances. While productions of “Blues Brothers,” “mothers.lovers.revolutionists,” and “Am Broadway ist die Hölle los” have already reached capacity, a range of other events are scheduled to take the stage, offering something for a variety of tastes.
On , the Ukrainian Royal Classical Ballet will present “Cinderella” at 5:00 PM. The performance, based on Charles Perrault’s classic tale, promises a traditional ballet interpretation exploring themes of love and overcoming adversity. The production will utilize classical ballet techniques to tell the story of a young woman’s journey from hardship to happiness with the help of a fairy godmother.
The Harztheater will bring a stage adaptation of the iconic film “The Blues Brothers” to the Gemeindehaus on and , both at 7:30 PM. The musical promises a high-energy performance featuring beloved songs like “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love,” “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “Soul Man,” and “Jailhouse Rock.” The plot follows Jake and Elwood Blues on a mission to save the orphanage where they grew up, inevitably leading to a series of chaotic encounters.
For those interested in a more intimate musical experience, Marta Wryk (mezzo-soprano) and Sina Kloke (piano) will perform “mothers. Lovers. Revolutionists. – Komponistinnen im Portrait Volume 2” at the Museum Otto Schäfer on at 7:30 PM. This internationally acclaimed project highlights the work of female composers who faced significant obstacles in pursuing their art. The program will feature pieces by Clara Schumann, Pauline Viardot, Rosy Wertheim, Irene Poldowski, Grażyna Bacewicz, Marie von Kehler and Alma Mahler, and will also explore the romantic relationships of these composers and their impact on their careers.
The Comödie Dresden will present “Die Goldfische” (The Goldfish), a comedy based on Alireza Golafshan’s film, on and , both at 7:30 PM. This inclusive production features both professional actors and performers with physical or cognitive disabilities, creating a diverse ensemble. The production received the audience award at the Monica-Bleibtreu-Preis at the Privattheatertagen 2023 in Hamburg.
Musical theatre fans can look forward to “Am Broadway ist die Hölle los” on at 7:30 PM. Described as “Musical trifft Comedy,” the show, presented by the Kammeroper Köln and the Deutsche Musical Company, will feature performances of popular songs from musicals such as “Mary Poppins,” “My Fair Lady,” “Ich war noch niemals in New York,” and ABBA’s “Mamma Mia.”
A concert featuring the Concertgebouw Kammerorchester and violinist Niek Baar is scheduled for at 7:30 PM at the Theater im Gemeindehaus. The program includes selections from Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s “Lieder Ohne Worte,” Ernest Chausson’s “Poème op. 25,” Antonio Bazzini’s “Calabrese op. 34 Nr. 6,” and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s “Streichoktett op. 20.” Baar, a Dutch violinist, has established himself as a charismatic performer, and previously performed in Schweinfurt with pianist Ben Kim. The Concertgebouw Kammerorchester is comprised of members of the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam and is known for its high quality and intensity.
Rounding out the February program, “Vierzig Karat” (Forty Carats) will be performed on at 7:30 PM and at 2:30 PM. This comedy by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Grédy, which also inspired a successful film starring Liv Ullmann, Gene Kelly, and Edward Albert, tells the story of Lisa, a successful New Yorker who finds herself falling for a young student while on vacation. The production features Mariella Ahrens, Fabian Kuhn, Simona Mai, Ferdinand Ascher, Sydney Tombrink, Sascha Kudella, and Eva Holzapfel.
