Scientists are developing plans for a crewed mission to Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, citing the moon’s thick atmosphere and surface conditions as making it a reasonable destination for humans, according to reporting from Space.

Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a dense atmosphere and stable bodies of liquid on its surface. These characteristics provide natural protection against solar radiation and cosmic rays, which are primary hazards for astronauts traveling to Mars or the lunar surface.

Why is Titan considered a viable destination for humans?

Titan’s atmospheric pressure is roughly 1.5 times that of Earth’s, which means astronauts wouldn’t require the pressurized suits necessary on the Moon or Mars. According to the research highlighted by Space, the moon’s nitrogen-rich air acts as a shield, blocking the high-energy particles that typically threaten human health during deep-space missions.

The surface temperature on Titan averages around -179 degrees Celsius. While extreme, this is a thermal challenge that can be managed with heating technology, unlike the radiation challenges which require massive amounts of physical shielding.

The moon also features lakes and seas of liquid ethane and methane. These hydrocarbons provide a potential source of fuel and chemical feedstock for future colonies, reducing the amount of supplies humans would need to transport from Earth.
