Scotland Fans Flock to USA: First Tournament Appearance Since 1998

Scotland Fans Flock to USA: First Tournament Appearance Since 1998

February 25, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

The anticipation is building for Scotland’s return to the World Cup stage in 2026, and with that excitement comes logistical hurdles. Thousands of Scottish fans, known as the Tartan Army, are preparing to travel to the United States for the tournament – Scotland’s first appearance since 1998.

A recent surge in bookings, with travel agents reporting an 800% increase in reservations to the US, underscores the enthusiasm surrounding Steve Clarke’s team’s qualification. Scotland is slated to face Haiti and Morocco in Boston, and a challenging match against Brazil in Miami. The draw, finalized last week, has already sparked a significant mobilization of supporters.

However, a potential snag regarding a beloved accessory of the Tartan Army – the sporran – threatened to dampen the spirits. World Cup stadium regulations initially deemed sporrans non-compliant with security protocols concerning bag sizes and transparency. The stadium code of conduct permits only clear plastic bags not exceeding 12in x 12in x 6in, or small, non-see-through bags measuring no more than 4.5in x 6.5in. Many sporrans exceed these dimensions.

Fortunately, following discussions between FIFA and the Scottish Football Association (SFA), a resolution has been reached. Fans will now be permitted to wear sporrans into the stadiums. This decision acknowledges the cultural significance of the sporran as an integral part of traditional Scottish attire, and a symbol of national identity.

“The Tartan Army are well-known and the sporran is part of our uniform,” Hamish Husband, a veteran of the Tartan Army, told BBC Radio Scotland’s Lunchtime Live. “Our sporrans will contain our match tickets and hope – that’s all we want to smuggle into the stadiums.” His comment highlights the practical and symbolic importance of the sporran for travelling supporters.

The agreement is a significant win for Scottish fans, who otherwise would have faced the prospect of leaving their sporrans in lockers or discarding them altogether. The issue resonated deeply within the fanbase, with the sporran viewed not merely as an accessory, but as a representation of Scottish friendship and tradition when travelling abroad.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first to feature 48 teams, expanding the tournament’s scope and reach. It will be hosted across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, running from June 11 to July 19. The expanded format presents both opportunities and challenges for participating nations and their supporters.

While the sporran issue has been resolved, other logistical considerations remain for fans making the transatlantic journey. Bookings to both Boston and New York have seen a substantial increase, with On the Beach reporting a 606% rise compared to the three days prior to the draw. Miami bookings have also experienced a significant surge, fueled by the prospect of witnessing Scotland compete against Brazil.

Zoe Harris, chief customer officer at On the Beach, noted the pent-up excitement, stating, “It’s been 28 long years since the Tartan Army last packed their bags for a party on this scale and you can feel the excitement bursting through our site.”

The return to the World Cup stage is not without its financial implications for fans. Reports indicate supporters are spending thousands of pounds to realize their dream of supporting Scotland in the US. This includes the cost of flights, accommodation, and match tickets, reflecting the dedication and passion of the Tartan Army.

However, one traditional accompaniment for Scottish fans will be absent from the stands. Buckfast, a caffeinated tonic wine popular in Scotland, has been banned from the World Cup in America. This prohibition adds another layer of adjustment for supporters accustomed to enjoying the beverage while following their team.

As the tournament draws closer, the focus will undoubtedly shift to on-field preparations. Steve Clarke will be aiming to guide Scotland to a successful campaign against challenging opponents. But for the thousands of fans making the trip, the World Cup represents more than just football. it’s a celebration of Scottish identity and a chance to share their passion with the world, sporran and all.

The enthusiasm surrounding Scotland’s qualification is palpable, and the logistical arrangements are falling into place. The Tartan Army is ready to descend upon the US, bringing with them a vibrant atmosphere and unwavering support for their national team.
