England’s Winning Streak Faces Test Against Scotland at Murrayfield

– England travel to Murrayfield to face Scotland in the Calcutta Cup, a fixture steeped in history and rivalry. While Scotland have enjoyed recent success in the fixture, winning four of the last six meetings, questions remain about whether those victories were a result of their own improvement or England’s shortcomings.

England currently boast a 12-match winning run, a stark contrast to their performances in recent years. This form has led some to believe that head coach Steve Borthwick has finally unlocked the team’s potential. The team’s recent performance, including a dominant 48-7 victory over Wales with a hat-trick from Henry Arundell, suggests a team building momentum and confidence.

However, analysis suggests that England’s dominance hasn’t always been about Scotland raising their game. One observer noted, “Maybe it’s not about Scotland supposedly playing above themselves… Maybe it’s been more about England not being good enough.” England’s overall Six Nations record in recent years supports this view, with only one title win and multiple finishes outside the top four.

The historical head-to-head record favors England, leading 83-48, and they are the current holders of the Calcutta Cup after a narrow 16-15 win almost 12 months ago. This win ended a four-match winning streak for Scotland dating back to 2021.

Despite England’s recent form, Scotland will be motivated by a desire to avenge their opening round defeat to Italy (18-15), a loss that marked their first in a Six Nations opener since 2020. Scotland’s coach, Gregor Townsend, will be looking for a significant improvement from his side.

Ben Earl, England’s No. 8, acknowledged the challenge Scotland will present, stating they are aware of what a “wounded animal” looks like, referencing Scotland’s current pressure following their defeat. He also conceded that Scotland were tactically superior in last year’s Calcutta Cup victory, but believes England have progressed in the last 12 months.

The match at Murrayfield represents a significant test for England’s newfound mettle. Scotland’s Tuipulotu has emphasized his team’s “desperation” ahead of the fixture, signaling their intent to fight for the Calcutta Cup. The game promises to be a fierce contest, with both sides battling for pride, Six Nations points, and the historic trophy, first played for in 1879.

Betting odds currently favor England to win by 8-14 points (21/10 with William Hill), while Tommy Freeman is tipped as a potential tryscorer (13/10 with BoyleSports). France remain the overall favorites to win the Six Nations, despite England’s strong start to the campaign.

England’s last win at Murrayfield came in February 2020, the same year they last won the Six Nations tournament and the Triple Crown. Scotland will be eager to break that streak and reclaim the Calcutta Cup on home soil.
