Scotland’s Last Castle Up for Grabs: A Billionaire’s Royal Retreat Hits the Market
Carbisdale Castle: A Turbulent History and Uncertain Future
Carbisdale Castle, the last castle built in Scotland, has had a tumultuous 117-year existence. From being a “Castle of Contempt” to serving as a refuge for the king of Norway and even a youth hostel, its fate has been nothing short of dramatic.
Following years of neglect and disrepair after 2014, the castle’s fortunes changed in 2022 when billionaire Samantha Kane acquired it. Kane invested millions of pounds in renovations, with ambitious plans to build a replica of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in the surrounding area.
However, the local nobility responded to Kane’s presence with disdain, creating a tense atmosphere that ultimately led to Kane’s decision to sell the castle. Carbisdale Castle is now on the market for £5 million, marking the end of a brief but eventful chapter in its history.
