Scott Bessent Appointed US Treasury Secretary by Donald Trump: A Look at His Financial Journey
Scott Bessent Appointed U.S. Treasury Secretary
Scott Bessent, the founder of hedge fund Key Square Group, has been appointed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as the Secretary of the Treasury. Bessent will assist Trump with economic, fiscal, and tax issues in the United States.
Bessent previously worked for George Soros, a prominent investor and supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Soros and his family have donated millions to the Democratic Party. Bessent joined Soros Fund Management in 1991.
After leaving Soros in 2000, Bessent returned in 2011 and later became Soros’s head of investments. He left in 2015 to establish Key Square Group, which managed approximately $600 million in assets as of December 2023. Reports indicate that Bessent has not spoken to Soros for years.
Michael Oliver Weinberg, a professor at Columbia Business School, described Bessent as a sharp investor, similar to Soros. Weinberg praised his ability to stay ahead of market trends.
Bessent, a South Carolina native, graduated from Yale University in 1984. He emerged as one of Trump’s candidates for Treasury Secretary, competing with Marc Rowan, Howard Lutnick, and Kevin Warsh.
During Trump’s campaign, Bessent served as a key economic advisor and donated around $3 million to Trump. He believes Trump has a strong understanding of economic policy, in contrast to Harris, whom he views as lacking economic insight.
Bessent will replace Janet Yellen, the former Treasury Secretary under Joe Biden. Notably, Bessent supported the Democratic Party in the early 2000s, specifically backing Al Gore in his presidential run.
