The Sharks are set to appoint Scott Mathie as their new attack coach, bolstering head coach JP Pietersen’s coaching structure. The move comes as Pietersen is expected to be formally announced as the full-time head coach this week, retaining assistants Joey Mongalo, Warren Whiteley, and Philip Lemmer.

Mathie, currently with Edinburgh Rugby, will return to Durban at the end of the current season. Edinburgh confirmed on Monday that the 43-year-old would be pursuing a new opportunity, bringing an end to his tenure with the Scottish club. His arrival is intended to revitalize the Sharks’ attack, filling the void left by Dave Williams, who has transitioned to a consulting role with the USA Eagles.

The appointment marks a return to familiar territory for Mathie, who previously represented the Sharks as a scrumhalf between 2006 and 2008. He also has a pre-existing relationship with Edinburgh coach Sean Everitt, having worked alongside him at the Sharks in previous roles, where Everitt held a senior coaching position and Mathie was involved with the junior structures.

Mathie’s recent success with Edinburgh has drawn attention to his coaching abilities. Since joining the club in August 2024, he has been credited with bringing “energy and insight” to their attacking game, according to Everitt. He previously guided the New England Free Jacks to back-to-back Major League Rugby titles in 2023 and 2024, further establishing his credentials as a dynamic and effective attack coach.

“He is a talented coach who has brought a lot of energy and insight to our attacking game since he arrived in Edinburgh,” Everitt said. “Scott still has a lot to contribute over the remainder of the current campaign. We wish him all the best in his next challenge.”

The Sharks’ decision to pursue Mathie signals a clear intent to sharpen their attacking prowess. The team currently sits fourth in the Vodacom URC standings, but recently suffered a loss to Leinster’s second-stringers, highlighting a potential need for increased offensive firepower. The anticipated return of four Springboks – Eben Etzebeth, Grant Williams, Lukhanyo Am, and Aphelele Fassi – for their upcoming two-match URC tour against Ulster and the Lions will undoubtedly provide a boost, but Mathie’s expertise will be crucial in integrating these key players into a cohesive and potent attacking system.

Mathie’s coaching journey has taken him through various levels of the game. After retiring as a player in October 2013, following stints with the Blue Bulls, Leeds Carnegie, Sale Sharks, and Eastern Province Kings, he transitioned into coaching. He served as Head Coach of Durban High School before moving to the professional ranks, demonstrating a commitment to developing talent at all levels.

His time with the Griquas, New England Free Jacks, and Edinburgh Rugby has provided him with diverse experiences and a proven track record of success. The Free Jacks’ consecutive MLR titles underscore his ability to build a winning culture and implement effective attacking strategies. His recent work with Edinburgh has also been noted, with the club turning their season around and positioning themselves for a potential playoff berth.

Edinburgh are currently preparing to face the Sharks in the URC, a match that holds particular significance for Mathie given his former association with the Durban-based franchise. He acknowledged the challenge, stating that the Sharks are likely to field a team with a significant number of Springbok representatives. “We expect exactly what they are, a very accomplished, if not Springbok-laden team that’s coming here,” Mathie said. “It’s a massive challenge, but an exciting one.”

The appointment of Mathie represents a strategic move by the Sharks to enhance their attacking capabilities and compete at the highest level of the URC. His experience, combined with his existing relationship with key personnel within the organization, positions him well to make a significant impact on the team’s performance. The formal announcement of both Pietersen’s full-time role and Mathie’s arrival is expected this week, signaling a new chapter for the Sharks as they strive for success in the competitive landscape of professional rugby.
