Scottie Scheffler’s Masters-Winning Yukon XL Auctioned for Charity
Scottie Scheffler‘s “GMC Airlines” Up for Auction, benefiting Childhood Cancer Charity
Scottie Scheffler, the two-time Masters champion, is auctioning off his first car, a 2012 GMC Yukon XL affectionately nicknamed “GMC Airlines,” to benefit Triumph Over Kid Cancer (TOKC). The auction, hosted by Heritage Auctions, kicked off with a starting bid of $50,000, with all proceeds going to the charity.
The Yukon holds a special place in Scheffler’s heart, having transported him to countless junior tournaments, AJGA events, and college competitions.
“Most people get a T-shirt, I got a $50,000 car payment,” joked Scheffler’s father, Scott, recalling the purchase after a memorable Masters trip in 2012.
After graduating from the University of Texas, Scott gifted the vehicle to Scottie, who drove it for eight years and 184,000 miles. Even after achieving PGA Tour success and becoming a millionaire many times over, Scheffler continued to drive the Yukon, affectionately patched with duct tape on the steering wheel.
“I definitely drove it for too long,” Scheffler admitted. The idea to auction the car for charity came from a playful argument with his caddie, Ted Scott, about whose car was worth less.”He’s like, ‘No way, man, Toyotas run forever, my car is worth way more than your car,’ ” scheffler recounted. “We had this back and forth and we kept hitting balls and I said, ‘I got it, my car is worth more than your car because mine has the Masters GMC logo on the back and I’m a Masters champion.’ ”
Ultimately,it was Scheffler’s father who suggested donating the Yukon to TOKC,a charity founded by James Ragan,a freind from junior golf who tragically lost his battle with osteosarcoma.
“James was a buddy that I grew up with playing golf. He passed away due to cancer but he started this foundation,” Scottie said. “It’s something we’re very passionate about.”
Scheffler personally signed the dash and passenger side airbag panel with “First Owned Vehicle” inscriptions, adding a unique touch to this already special vehicle.
Heritage Auctions, recognizing the historical significance of the car, compares it to owning Jack Nicklaus’ first car, driven across the country during his early career.
“imagine if you owned the first car that Jack Nicklaus owned and drove cross country from tournament to tournament until he won his first Masters. That’s akin to this opportunity were you can win the first vehicle of two-time Masters winner Scottie Scheffler who is only 27 years old,” the auction website states.
Adding to the generosity, Heritage Auctions has pledged to donate 100% of its commission to TOKC.
This auction presents a unique opportunity for golf enthusiasts and philanthropists alike to own a piece of golfing history while supporting a worthy cause.
