Celtic have completed the signing of striker James Wilson from Brighton & Hove Albion, according to multiple sources, in a deal reported to be worth £18 million. The 24-year-old England international finalized his transfer on Thursday, signing a five-year contract at the Scottish Premiership champions. Wilson becomes Celtic’s most expensive acquisition since the club’s 2021 summer spending spree, surpassing the £15 million spent on Kristoffer Ajer.

The move marks a significant addition to Celtic’s attacking options ahead of the 2026-27 season. Wilson, who scored 12 Premier League goals for Brighton during the 2025-26 campaign, will join a forward line that includes Leigh Griffiths and new arrival Moussa Dembélé. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed the signing in a statement, saying, “James is a player with proven quality in top-flight football. His pace, technical ability, and goal-scoring record make him a perfect fit for our style of play.”

Other Premiership clubs make key moves

While Celtic’s acquisition of Wilson dominated headlines, other Scottish Premiership clubs also made notable transfer decisions. Rangers, who finished second in the 2025-26 league, secured a loan deal for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz, according to a statement from the club. The 21-year-old German international will join the Ibrox side for the remainder of the season, with an option to buy in the summer. Rangers’ director of football, Les Ferdinand, described the move as “a strategic addition to strengthen our midfield options.”

Hearts, meanwhile, confirmed the signing of midfielder James Maddison from Leicester City in a £10 million deal. The 26-year-old Englishman, who had a loan spell at Hull City last season, will provide depth to Hearts’ central midfield. Manager Ian Cathro expressed confidence in Maddison’s ability to adapt to the Premiership, stating, “James has the technical quality and experience to thrive in this league.”

Departures and loan exits

The summer window also saw several players depart Premiership clubs. Aberdeen announced the departure of forward Chris Martin, who has joined Bundesliga side Mainz 05 in a £4.5 million transfer. Martin, 29, scored 15 goals in 48 appearances for Aberdeen last season but struggled to maintain consistency. His exit follows a series of loan moves, including stints at Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, Kilmarnock loaned out defender Callum McGregor to Scottish Championship side Hamilton Academical. The 23-year-old, who made 12 Premiership appearances for Kilmarnock in 2025-26, will spend the season on loan to gain regular playing time. Kilmarnock manager Lee Clark said, “Callum needs to play regularly to develop his career. This move gives him the opportunity to do so.”

Impact on the 2026-27 season

The influx of new signings has prompted speculation about the competitive balance in the Scottish Premiership. Celtic’s acquisition of Wilson, combined with the arrival of Dembélé, has positioned the club as strong favorites for the title. However, Rangers’ signing of Wirtz and Hearts’ addition of Maddison could challenge their dominance.

Analysts note that the Premiership’s top clubs are investing heavily to close the gap with Scottish football’s traditional powerhouses. “The financial landscape is changing,” said Jamie McAllister, a sports economist at the University of Edinburgh. “Clubs are no longer just competing on the pitch but also in the transfer market. This could lead to a more balanced league in the coming seasons.”

As the window approaches its closing date on August 31, attention will shift to potential late moves. Clubs like Dundee United and St. Johnstone are reportedly exploring options to strengthen their squads, with interest in midfielders and defenders. The final weeks of the window could see further developments that reshape the Premiership’s competitive dynamics.
