Bariloche Tourism Chief Faces Scrutiny Over Spending
Bariloche, Argentina – Gastón Burlón, the former Secretary of Tourism for the popular Argentinian tourist destination Bariloche, is facing scrutiny over allegations of improper spending during his tenure.
Burlón, who rose to prominence through his work at the Horizontes patagónicos travel agency before assuming the Secretary role in 2017, is accused of using funds from the Ente Mixto de Promoción Turística de Bariloche (Emprotur) for personal gain. Emprotur, a public-private entity responsible for promoting tourism in Bariloche, receives funding from both provincial and municipal governments, as well as a portion of the local Safety and Hygiene Inspection Fee.
The controversy erupted in 2023 when Santiago Díaz Vélez, the former manager of Emprotur, resigned from the board, citing disagreements over “remarkable expenses” incurred by Burlón and other board members. Díaz Vélez’s accusations prompted Councilwoman Julieta Wallace to formally request information from the Bariloche City Council regarding Burlón’s travel expenses and per diems for 2022 and 2023.The alleged irregularities center around purchases made by Burlón during a period when he was on leave from his Secretary position but still engaged in official tourism activities in Europe, including attending trade fairs in France and Italy.
Among the purchases under investigation are a cellphone, a suit, sneakers, and various travel allowances. While some funds were reportedly reimbursed, concerns remain about potential personal benefit derived from utilizing Emprotur’s tax-exempt status for purchases made abroad.
This developing story has sparked debate within Bariloche, raising questions about transparency and accountability in the management of public funds allocated to tourism promotion.
