JAKARTA — An Australian research expedition to the Antarctic Ocean has yielded discoveries of unusual marine life, including sea pigs and other potentially new species.
Researchers aboard the RSV Nuyina, an Australian Antarctic Icebreaker, spent 60 days exploring the icy continent’s edge. This voyage marked the vessel’s inaugural mission dedicated to marine science, according to expedition details.

The collected specimens also featured numerous marine pigs – a type of sea cucumber – and small crustaceans known as isopods that inhabit the seabed.
“(We have collected) a vrey large marine biodiversity,and the possibility of some new species for science,” Professor Strunell,a member of the Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future research program,told ABC News.
Specially designed wet wells on the ship allowed researchers to collect the delicate creatures without causing harm.
Among the finds was a sea butterfly, a type of sea snail that appears to flap its wings while swimming.
Remarkably, one of these sea butterflies laid eggs in a shipboard aquarium, providing researchers with a rare opportunity to document the development of pteropod eggs for the first time.
“The team is very happy to have that little creature and watch it and take care of him, so he can tell all the secrets that have been hidden,” said Dra. Laura Herraiz Borreguero, from CSIRO and the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership (AAPP).
