The Decade-Long Puzzle of Starfish Wasting Disease
The first signs of SWD appeared in 2013, with reports of starfish exhibiting lesions, losing limbs, and ultimately disintegrating. The speed and scale of the outbreak were alarming. “We wouldn’t know what season the pathogenic agent came around. We wouldn’t know what its environmental reservoirs were. We didn’t know what was making stars susceptible,” explains drew Harvell, a leading marine biologist and author of The Ocean’s Menagerie and Ocean Outbreak. Early attempts to understand the disease were hampered by a lack of fundamental knowledge. Releasing recovered animals back into the wild felt irresponsible without knowing the underlying cause.
The disease wasn’t just a scientific curiosity; it represented a significant ecological threat. Starfish are keystone species in many marine ecosystems, meaning their presence is crucial for maintaining balance. Their decline has ripple effects throughout the food web,impacting other species and potentially disrupting entire coastal environments.
Identifying the Culprit: A Game Changer for Research
After years of painstaking research, scientists have pinpointed a key player in the outbreak: a densovirus. “And so knowing that this is one of the primary causative agents – maybe the only causative agent – allows us to test for it in the water,” Harvell explains. This discovery is a turning point.
Previously, researchers were working in the dark, unable to focus their efforts. Now, they can actively search for the virus in affected areas, identify potential hotspots, and investigate how it spreads. This includes analyzing the water quality in different bays to determine if the virus is concentrating in specific locations.crucially, the research can now focus on the role of the starfish diet. Are certain foods concentrating the bacterium and delivering a lethal dose?
Designing Strategies for Saving Starfish
The identification of the densovirus isn’t just about understanding the disease; it’s about finding solutions. “Now we’ll be able to answer those questions, and I think that’s going to give us a really good chance to design better strategies for saving them,” Harvell states.
This newfound knowledge opens doors to several potential interventions. Researchers can explore ways to bolster starfish immune systems, develop treatments to combat the virus, and identify environmental factors that exacerbate the disease. Understanding the virus’s lifecycle and transmission pathways is also critical for preventing future outbreaks.
“It feels like you now have a key to use to sort of unlock various pieces of this,” a reporter noted during an interview with Harvell.And that’s precisely how Harvell feels. “We totally do.And it’s so exciting and so gratifying because that’s what we’re supposed to do, right? As scientists and as disease ecologists, we’re supposed to solve these mysteries.” After 12 years of frustration, the breakthrough is notably rewarding. “And I don’t think there’s a day in the last 12 years that I haven’t thought about it and been really frustrated we didn’t know what it was. So it’s particularly gratifying to me to have to have reached this point.”
