SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Seattle Seahawks are Super Bowl champions once again, riding a dominant defensive performance to a 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.
The Seahawks’ defense, nicknamed the “Dark Side,” proved too much for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, sacking him six times and forcing three turnovers. Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu sealed the win with a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
“We never waver, man. We believe in each other. We love each other, and now we’re world champions,” Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said.
Kenneth Walker III, named Super Bowl MVP, led the Seattle offense with 135 rushing yards. Quarterback Sam Darnold, completing 19 of 38 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown, managed the game effectively and avoided turnovers.
The victory marks the second Super Bowl title in franchise history for the Seahawks, evoking memories of their first championship run a dozen years ago, also fueled by a formidable defense. This time, however, the Seahawks didn’t need a last-second goal-line stand to secure the win.
The Patriots struggled to find any offensive rhythm against the relentless Seattle defense. Maye, who finished with 295 passing yards and a touchdown, was under constant pressure and ultimately undone by costly mistakes. He threw two interceptions and fumbled once.
“Definitely hurts. They played better than us tonight,” Maye said.
Seattle took a commanding lead early, building a 19-0 advantage thanks to four field goals from Jason Myers, who set a Super Bowl record by making all five of his attempts. A 16-yard touchdown pass from Darnold to A.J. Barner extended the lead in the fourth quarter.
New England finally broke through with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Maye to Mack Hollins with 12:27 remaining, cutting the deficit to 19-7. However, the Patriots couldn’t sustain the momentum. Julian Love’s interception quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback.
The Seahawks’ defensive dominance mirrored their success in their previous Super Bowl victory, relying on a similar formula of stifling the opposing offense. Linebackers Derick Hall and Uchenna Nwosu, along with safety Julian Love, were key contributors to the defensive effort.
Darnold’s performance was particularly noteworthy, as he became the first quarterback from the 2018 NFL draft class to win a Super Bowl. After being labeled a bust and bouncing around the league, he found a home in Seattle and led the team to a 17-3 record.
“To do this with this team, I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Darnold said. “So proud of our guys, our defense. I mean, I can’t say enough great things about our defense, our special teams.”
The Patriots, aiming for a record seventh Super Bowl title, were unable to overcome the Seahawks’ relentless defense. New England coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged his team’s shortcomings.
“Just reminding them that we’re 307 days into what hopefully is a long, successful relationship and program, and it’s OK to be disappointed,” Vrabel said.
The Seahawks’ victory is a testament to Macdonald’s defensive philosophy, which prioritized stopping the opposing offense. His hiring two years ago, a move that went against the trend of teams seeking offensive-minded coaches, proved to be a masterstroke.
Walker’s MVP award marked the first time a running back had earned the honor since Terrell Davis in 1998.
