Seán Defoe’s Inspiring Journey: Cancer Recovery & Returning to Work Tips
Returning to Work After Cancer: Seán Defoe’s Experience
Seán Defoe, political correspondent for Newstalk, recently shared his journey of returning to work after recovering from testicular cancer. Each year, 170 men in Ireland receive a testicular cancer diagnosis, and Seán was one of them last year.
After months of treatment, he returned to work during the local and European elections in June. Seán described the past year as challenging and noted that he loves elections. However, he faced emotional anniversaries during this busy period. He highlighted that it had been a year since he started chemotherapy.
Seán emphasized the growing number of young people diagnosed with cancer. He expressed concern about the rise in cases like bowel cancer among younger adults. Despite the increase in successful recoveries, he acknowledged that receiving a life-altering diagnosis is difficult and wants to spark conversations about these experiences.
When Seán returned to work, he decided to fully engage despite worries about cognitive challenges, such as “brain fog,” which can occur after chemotherapy. He recounted a moment on air where he confused a colleague’s name, showcasing the pressure he felt.
Susanne Dowd from the Irish Cancer Society shared that many cancer survivors experience anxiety about returning to work. They often struggle with self-confidence and may face issues like reduced income and unsupportive colleagues. The Irish Cancer Society suggests easing back into work part-time for those who can.
This conversation sheds light on the challenges and realities for cancer survivors as they reintegrate into their work environment.
