Tributes have been paid to the celebrated Irish broadcaster and actor Gerry Rocks, who passed away recently. Known for his insightful interviews and engaging presence, Rocks left an indelible mark on the arts and culture landscape in Ireland and the UK.

A Versatile Career in Arts and Performance

Gerry Rocks enjoyed a distinguished career that spanned both the stage and screen, alongside his prominent work in broadcasting. His theatrical experience included performances at prestigious venues such as the Abbey Theater in Dublin, and also the Royal Court, National, Donmar Warehouse, and Tricycle theatres in London. On screen, he was recognized for his roles in popular productions like The Bill, Glenroe, and Fair City.

A notable moment in his career was serving as the MC at the State banquet held at Dublin Castle for Queen Elizabeth II’s historic visit to Ireland in 2011. This role underscored his stature and ability to command significant public events.

The Art of Storytelling and the Teacher’s Insight

In a 2014 interview with the Irish Examiner,Rocks reflected on his journey into acting, drawing parallels between teaching and performance. “I worked as a teacher for seven years,” he explained.”I liked teaching younger kids, but it remains the most tough job I’ve ever done. When you’re on, you’re on – it’s like acting and live radio. The skill sets are similar too – the most crucial trait in all those jobs is to be able to listen.”

He further elaborated on his initial career path, stating, “I didn’t set out to be an actor. When I was at college I got involved in am dram, doing concerts and plays, which meant acting at night, and my voice was getting really tired, yet it was vital for my work as a teacher.” This period highlights his dedication and the demanding nature of balancing multiple professional commitments.

Rocks consistently emphasized his lifelong passion for narrative. “I always loved telling stories, even as a kid,” he shared in the same interview. “That’s what acting and presenting is: telling stories.” This fundamental appreciation for storytelling was a driving force throughout his diverse career.

Esteemed Colleagues Remember a True Professional

Colleagues and collaborators have widely praised Rocks’ professionalism, intellect, and genuine passion for the arts.

Author Kevin Barry described Rocks as “the ultimate kind of pro.” He recalled, “He was always the guy who’d read the book, who’d seen the film or who’d seen the exhibition and was really well prepared and just really kind of genuinely interested in what you were doing and what you had to say.” This meticulous preparation and sincere interest were hallmarks of his approach.

Caitríona McLaughlin, artistic director of the Abbey Theatre, lauded Rocks as “a rigorous interviewer” whose “passion for the arts and culture was second to none.” She added, “The sort of detail and research that he did was that of an artist himself. And that’s where his curiosity came from, and that’s what made him so capable in terms of how he would sort of bridge the gap for the audience between how the work is made and how the artists approach the work and the audience experience it.”

author John Banville remembered Rocks as “a wonderfully spirited interviewer.” He noted, “He took the arts seriously, but not solemnly. He saw himself as the interviewer. He never tried to impose his views, he never tried to catch one out.” Banville drew a comparison to broadcaster mike Murphy, stating, “He and Mike Murphy were very alike in that you felt when you were talking to them that they knew your stuff. they were going to give you the best. They were gonna encourage you to give the best possible version of yourself and of the work and the discussion that was there.”

Broadcaster Oliver Callan echoed these sentiments, remarking that Rocks took the arts seriously “but he wasn’t solemn about it and he knew that the kernel of truth was the important part of the culture.”

Gerry Rocks’ legacy as a dedicated artist, insightful interviewer, and passionate advocate for culture will undoubtedly endure.
