Searching for a Cure: Staten Island Family’s Battle Against Childhood Virus
Ali Rose Modica’s Journey to Recovery
Ali Rose Modica is a 5-year-old girl from Staten Island, N.Y. She was a typical child, attending preschool and enjoying life as a big sister to two baby brothers. In January, Ali Rose faced a sudden health crisis when she was placed on a ventilator. This situation arose from complications related to the influenza virus.
Doctors transported her from Jersey Shore Medical Center to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Due to snowy weather, the initial helicopter transport was canceled, resulting in a time loss. Doctors assessed that Ali Rose had a 65% chance of survival.
Upon arrival at the hospital, Ali Rose suffered cardiac arrest. She was unconscious and put on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine. Though her vital organs were damaged, they now function properly. Unfortunately, she sustained hypoxic brain injury, impacting her motor skills, functions, and speech.
Her parents, Dalainna and Joseph Modica, saved her cord blood at her birth. They are now searching for healthcare professionals focused on stem cell research for non-traumatic brain injuries. They hope to connect with experts who can help their daughter regain her abilities.
