Vincent Doumeizel Champions Seaweed‍ as a Super Solution for global Crises

⁤ ⁣ Updated June 08, 2025

Lesconil,⁣ France – In the⁢ Brittany fishing port of Lesconil, vincent Doumeizel, a ⁤senior advisor to the UN Global⁣ Compact,‍ champions⁣ seaweed as⁣ a pivotal‌ solution to‌ global challenges.⁢ He views this marine algae as a means ⁤to feed the‌ planet, ⁣restore‍ oceans, combat climate change, and replace⁢ plastics.

Doumeizel,a leading⁢ figure in the “seaweed revolution,” co-authored The Seaweed Manifesto in 2020,advocating for the use of algae ⁣to address climate, environmental, food, and‍ social crises. He believes seaweed is the world’s greatest untapped resource.

Marine algae, which emerged over a billion years ⁢ago, played a crucial role ⁣in oxygenating the‌ atmosphere. Doumeizel’s interest in seaweed was sparked during‍ a trip to Okinawa,⁣ Japan, where he observed the ‍longevity of residents who ⁤consumed it regularly. ‍Seaweed is rich in vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, fibers, and proteins.

while agriculture contributes considerably to ⁤greenhouse gas ‌emissions, seaweed cultivation requires no land, fertilizers, or freshwater. Research suggests that feeding red seaweed to cows could‌ reduce their methane emissions by up to 90 percent. Seaweed also captures more carbon per acre than land vegetation and can be transformed ⁤into bioplastics, biofuels, textiles, and pharmaceuticals.

Doumeizel recently launched a⁣ comic ‌book, The Seaweed Revolution, which mirrors his real-life advocacy. ‌He showcases various seaweed-based products, including ⁢sunglasses made from plankton, biodegradable garbage bags, and T-shirts spun from algae fibers.

The seaweed ‌industry is experiencing growth, with production more than tripling since 2000, reaching 39 million⁤ tonnes annually. The market is valued at $17 billion, with potential⁤ for an additional ⁣$12 billion by ‍2030 through investments in various applications.however, the ⁣industry lacks⁢ comprehensive ‌legislation and guidance.

Seaweed⁤ cultivation is also driving feminist change. Approximately 40 percent of seaweed start-ups worldwide are led by women. In Tanzania, the seaweed trade has empowered women,⁣ who retain nearly 80 percent of the profits, ⁢enabling them to build schools‌ and improve their livelihoods.the Global Seaweed Coalition is funding⁤ initiatives ⁢to teach women maritime skills to address challenges posed by ⁤climate change.

Climate change poses a threat to‍ seaweed habitats, with significant losses reported in regions like California, Norway, and Tasmania. Doumeizel⁣ emphasizes the importance⁢ of preserving “sea ⁣forests” and will unveil a UN Seaweed Task Force‍ at the ⁣upcoming UN‍ Ocean Conference. This ⁣task force aims to consolidate global efforts in regulation, research, and development.

The task force proposal has ‌garnered support from countries including Madagascar, Indonesia, South‌ Korea, and ⁢France,‍ with a draft resolution expected at the UN General Assembly this fall and a vote ⁤anticipated in 2026.

Doumeizel envisions turning oceanic overgrowth, such as sargassum blooms, into sustainable resources like fertilizers, bricks, and textiles. He advocates for farming the ocean to heal it, inviting a shift from Stone Age hunter-gatherer practices to sustainable cultivation.

What’s next

The UN Seaweed Task Force aims to establish global standards and centralize⁣ expertise, fostering responsible and sustainable scaling of the seaweed industry. The initiative seeks to unlock the full potential of seaweed as a solution to pressing global challenges.
