Responsibilities and Essential Functions
The Security Officer at Houston Methodist is responsible for a broad range of duties, extending beyond simple surveillance. The role encompasses personal protection assistance, traffic control, and active participation in emergency response situations. Officers may be required to employ Houston Methodist-approved defensive tactics to ensure the safety of those within the hospital environment. Essential functions include securing premises through regular patrols, monitoring surveillance cameras, and controlling access points. Responding to radio dispatches and emergency codes with timely and appropriate action is also crucial. Accurate record-keeping, including detailed reports of incidents, observations, and witness interviews, is a key responsibility. The position also requires adherence to all hospital policies and procedures, including those related to safety, hazardous materials, and patient confidentiality (HIPAA).
Beyond reactive responses, the role emphasizes proactive measures. This includes preventing loss and damage by identifying and reporting irregularities, and actively promoting a workplace safety culture to prevent workplace violence. Contributing to departmental goals and offering innovative solutions through participation in projects is also expected.
Qualifications and Required Credentials
Candidates must possess a High School diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool verification, or partial post-secondary education). While not strictly required, prior experience in criminal justice, security, or a related field is preferred. However, several certifications and licenses are mandatory for employment.
Successful applicants will be required to obtain a Texas Security Officer Non-Commissioned license within one year of hire, with application submission within 14 days of the start date. Alternatively, a Security Officer Commissioned Level 3 or Personal Protection Officer Level 4 license is acceptable. A valid Texas Driver’s License is also required and must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
candidates must hold current certifications in IAHSS (Certified Security Officer-Basic/Advanced/Supervisor from the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety) and NVCRISIS (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor certification from the Crisis Prevention Institute). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, while preferred, is not mandatory.

The position demands a diverse skillset. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to safely perform assigned tasks, as assessed through ongoing skills evaluations. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, particularly in interacting with patients, physicians, family members, and colleagues with a customer service focus.
