Selena Gomez Goes Incognito: Secretly Applying for Acting Jobs to Revive Her Career
Selena Gomez, actor and singer, no longer gives her name when applying for film and TV roles. She feels typecast in similar roles. Gomez started acting as a child on the show Barney and Friends and gained fame on the Disney Channel in Wizards of Waverly Place. She later ventured into music with Selena Gomez and the Scene and pursued a solo career.
Gomez appeared in films like Spring Breakers (2013), Rudderless (2014), and The Dead Don’t Die (2019). Currently, she stars in the Netflix film Emilia Pérez. Gomez expressed her desire to focus more on acting, saying, “Music will always be in my soul, but I never really got to spend enough time in the field that I originally wanted to be in.”
She aims for projects that differ from what people expect of her. Gomez described being typecast as her biggest challenge. She often submits auditions without revealing her identity. This strategy worked for the movie Fundamentals of Caring, where she succeeded despite initial skepticism from directors upon her arrival.
Gomez noted that casting directors often see her in roles similar to her past characters, which include “soft spoken” and “underdog” types. She admires those roles but wants to take on more challenging projects. She has specific directors, like Aaron Sorkin and Martin Scorsese, on her wish list for collaboration and emphasized that she doesn’t need to be the star.
Although she has completed significant work in music, she is taking a break to focus on acting. She stated, “Almost done. Music isn’t going away. I just set it down for a second.”
