Selena Gomez Sued for Fraud Over Mental Health Startup Wondermind

Selena Gomez is facing a federal lawsuit from five investors who claim the pop star and her mother committed fraud by failing to build and promote Wondermind Global, their mental health startup. According to reporting by the BBC, the shareholders filed the complaint in a federal court in Delaware, seeking to recover nearly $1.2 million in invested capital alongside legal costs and damages.

Allegations of Fraud and Abandonment at Wondermind

According to the lawsuit, investors backed Wondermind Global after founders Selena Gomez, Mandy Teefey, and Daniella Pierson promised that Gomez would serve as head of marketing and actively build the brand. The claimants allege that Gomez “purported to sign a contract obligating her to perform and then ignored it,” leaving the mental health platform in what court filings describe as a “state of financial calamity.” The BBC reported that the startup was launched in 2021 to help users build mental fitness, but plaintiffs argue that the founders “falsely represented” their position by suggesting major advertising deals, mobile applications, and celebrity cover stories were already underway.

The investors behind the lawsuit include Brent Saunders, chief executive of eye-health company Bausch + Lomb, alongside other individuals based in New York and Florida. Court documents state that Wondermind failed to fulfill basic operational requirements, such as paying vendors and employees on time. The BBC reported that promised partnerships and mobile app initiatives never materialized while company leadership remained silent. “For three years, while the company quietly collapsed around them, not one of its founders, officers, or directors said a word to the investors whose money was funding the collapse,” the complaint states, as reported by the BBC.

Discovery Through Investigative Journalism

According to the lawsuit, the investors remained entirely unaware of the financial and managerial distress surrounding Wondermind until an investigative report published by the online magazine The Cut surfaced in September 2025. That article exposed severe issues regarding the company’s financial health and leadership structure. Court filings state that the reporting revealed “Wondermind had no plan for its future – much less a plan for achieving a multi-billion dollar valuation,” according to the BBC.

Gomez, a child actor turned pop musician with more than 500 million social media followers and a net worth nearing $1 billion, co-founded Wondermind five years ago following public discussions about her own experiences with bipolar disorder. Her mother, Mandy Teefey, currently serves as chief executive after Daniella Pierson departed the firm. Alongside Wondermind, Gomez also launched the cosmetics brand Rare Beauty in 2020. Representatives for Gomez and Wondermind did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the lawsuit, according to the BBC.
