This victory opened Anatolia to Turkish settlement, fundamentally altering the region’s cultural and political landscape. Meet the Archers: Zeynep Cansu Ertürk and the Legacy of Ancestors
Among the competitors was 17-year-old Zeynep Cansu Ertürk from Eskişehir, riding her horse “Dizdarbey.” She has dedicated three years to the practice of mounted archery. Ertürk emphasized that the event was about more than just winning medals. She spoke of the importance of connecting with fellow enthusiasts, experiencing the unique atmosphere, and honoring the legacy of her ancestors.
“It feels like we’re growing wings and flying,” Ertürk told Anadolu Agency (AA). “Of course, medals and awards are nice, but what matters most is the people we meet here, the atmosphere, and carrying the legacy of our ancestors. Our forefathers once rode their horses across these lands. When you think of that, the pride and joy are even greater.”
Ertürk’s commitment to authenticity extends to her attire, carefully selecting clothing inspired by traditional animal-hide outfits to fully embody the spirit of the event. “It’s about bringing history to life,” she explained.”Being here, shooting arrows from horseback, among friends,is an honor.”
The Tradition of Horseback Archery
Horseback archery is a historical martial art that requires exceptional skill, coordination, and horsemanship. It was a crucial component of warfare for many cultures throughout history, including the Seljuk turks, Mongols, and Huns. The practice demands that archers accurately shoot arrows while riding at full gallop, frequently enough while performing complex maneuvers. Modern revivals of the sport aim to preserve this cultural heritage and promote physical fitness and historical awareness.
