SEMEDLAB: Three Spanish Associations Unite to Advance Laboratory Medicine

SEMEDLAB: Three Spanish Associations Unite to Advance Laboratory Medicine

January 20, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

On Jan. 1, the Spanish Society of Laboratory Medicine (SEMEDLAB) was formally established in Madrid, marking the merger of three longstanding organizations: the Spanish Association of Medical Biopathology-Laboratory Medicine (AEBM-ML), the Spanish Association of Clinical Laboratory (AEFA), and the Spanish Society of Laboratory Medicine (SEQCML). This unification brings together decades of expertise and innovation in the field.

“This isn’t a completely new start,” explains Antonio Buño, the newly appointed president. “The oldest of these societies has 76 years of history, and the youngest is 48 years old. They’ve been well-established national entities, and over the years, we’ve seen increasing overlap in their activities. In fact, the National Congress has been a joint effort for the past 18 years, and many members belonged to two or even all three societies. Our goals aligned—confirmed by member surveys—and the timing felt right.”

The process of merging began in early 2024, with a working group led by the presidents of the three societies. Legal experts guided the complex process, as mergers of this nature are rare. “We didn’t start from scratch; we had nearly 4,000 members and built on the strengths of each group. Now, we aim to do more, improve efficiency, and redefine our structures. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and while this is a transitional year, we’re focused on stabilizing this change with generosity, enthusiasm, and hard work.”

Choosing a name and logo for the new society sparked significant discussion. “We wanted something representative and a domain that was available,” Buño notes. “Branding experts helped us, and we’ve landed on a logo that everyone is starting to embrace.”

### A Cornerstone of Modern Medicine

Buño emphasizes that laboratory medicine is “a discipline without which modern medicine cannot be understood. We play a vital role across all specialties.” Innovations like new biomarkers and liquid biopsies are revolutionizing diagnostics and personalized treatments, enabling the analysis of tailored marker profiles.

Data management is another critical area, with artificial intelligence taking center stage. “AI’s predictive capabilities are transforming decision-making, giving rise to what’s now called the digital biomarker,” Buño explains. Image recognition, supported by AI algorithms, is also expanding the laboratory’s capabilities. “We’re highly dependent on technology, acting as translators between patients’ needs and clinical demands,” he adds.

Point-of-care testing, which allows for decentralized care, has also gained momentum, particularly since the pandemic, enabling rapid pathology screenings at the patient’s bedside.

### Inspiring New Voices

One of SEMEDLAB’s key goals is to attract new talent to the field. “Laboratory medicine remains one of the least popular specialties among medical residents,” Buño acknowledges. “While it’s easy to blame this on a lack of awareness, the reality is that most medical schools don’t teach clinical laboratory work or clinical biochemistry as core subjects.”

He believes greater exposure could spark interest. “Students often tell us they didn’t understand how laboratories actually function. For me, laboratory medicine encompasses one of the most beautiful aspects of medicine: understanding the pathophysiology of diseases. It’s about diagnosing not just what’s wrong, but why, and seeing the impact of treatments on patients. In some cases, this can even lead to direct patient interaction.”

With its rich history, innovative vision, and commitment to nurturing future professionals, SEMEDLAB is poised to shape the future of laboratory medicine in Spain and beyond.
Overwhelmingly positive, with a shared vision of advancing laboratory medicine in Spain⁤ and beyond,” says Buño.
