Senegal Wins Chaotic Africa Cup of Nations Final Against Morocco
Pape Gueye scored teh winning goal in extra time, giving senegal a 1-0 victory over host nation Morocco in a chaotic final on Sunday. The match was marred by fan attempts to storm the field and Senegalese players briefly leaving the pitch to protest a late penalty decision.
For a period,it was unclear if the game would resume amid the clashes between fans and players.
“We all saw what happened at the end of the match, but we made the decision to return to the field and give everything,” saeid Gueye.
Play resumed after a 14-minute stoppage. During regular time, Senegalese goalkeeper Édouard Mendy saved a last-minute penalty attempt by Brahim Díaz.
The victory marks Senegal’s second Africa Cup of Nations title, following their win in 2021. This is Morocco’s first defeat at home during the tournament.
