Senegal’s Oil and Gas Production Surges in Early 2026
Senegal’s hydrocarbon sector is demonstrating strong production momentum, according to a recent report from the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum, and Mines. In January 2026, the Sangomar oil field exported four cargoes, totaling 3.8 million barrels of crude oil.
To date, cumulative production from the site has reached 56.13 million barrels, with 55.7 million barrels already commercialized through 58 international cargoes, confirming the excellent performance of the facilities.
The country’s gas sector is also contributing to this growth, with the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field exporting three cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in January, representing 0.5 million cubic meters. Since the start of operations, total production has reached 3.77 million cubic meters of LNG.
The ministry highlighted an intensification and stabilization of gas operations, with 3.53 million cubic meters already sold on the global market, solidifying Senegal’s position as a new major player in the energy market.
The Sangomar field, operated by Australia’s Woodside Energy, began commercial production in June 2024, officially marking Senegal’s entry as an oil-producing nation. In 2024, the field produced 16.9 million barrels of crude, exceeding its initial target of 11.7 million barrels, according to the Ministry of Energy.
Following improvements in output, the Senegalese government revised its 2025 oil output forecast for the Sangomar offshore field upward to 34.5 million barrels, from a previous estimate of 30.53 million barrels. The daily average output from the offshore field in 2024 stood at 55,000 barrels, with the potential to reach up to 100,000 barrels per day.
The success of Sangomar is particularly noteworthy when compared to the GTA gas project, highlighting Senegal’s increasing importance in both the oil and gas sectors. The steady pace of crude oil exports provides the country with significant economic opportunities.
The Sangomar Field Development Phase 1 represents Senegal’s first oil project. Located approximately 100 kilometers south of Dakar, work on the field commenced in early 2020.
