President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has emphasized the stability and national unity of Senegal as he marks two years in office on April 4, 2026. According to reporting from RFI, the President has used the milestone to highlight the progress made in maintaining a cohesive state and a stable political environment during his tenure.

This focus on stability follows a period of active diplomatic engagement, including a meeting on March 21, 2026, in Paris. President Faye met with French President Emmanuel Macron as the two nations worked to redefine the relationship between Dakar and Paris.

Institutional Reforms and National Dialogue

The administration’s emphasis on unity is supported by institutional efforts initiated throughout 2025. On May 28, 2025, President Faye presided over the opening of the National Dialogue on the Political System at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center (CICAD). This event was designed as an in-depth reflection on major political and institutional issues facing the country.

Institutional Reforms and National Dialogue

The consultations brought together a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including representatives from political parties, trade unions, civil society, and religious and traditional authorities. The dialogue aimed to foster consensus and inclusive consultations based on trust and listening.

My role as the guarantor of national unity is to extend a hand to all, to reassure, unite, pacify, and reconcile, in order to strengthen the peace and stability essential to our country’s economic development

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye

During these proceedings, the President noted that the government must fulfill its sovereign duties while ensuring the opposition can exercise its rights freely and respectfully within legal frameworks. He specified that these consultations were held independently of electoral deadlines to allow for a focused approach to structural reforms.

The structural reforms targeted during the National Dialogue included:

  • The rationalization of the electoral calendar.
  • The governance and financing of political parties.
  • The establishment of an independent national electoral commission.
  • The management of the electoral register.
  • The role of the judiciary within the electoral process.

Long-term Strategy and International Engagement

The drive toward stability is linked to a broader long-term vision for the country. On October 29, 2024, the presidency introduced the SENEGAL 2050 NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION AGENDA, outlining a strategic path for the nation’s development over the coming decades.

Throughout 2025, President Faye maintained a consistent schedule of international diplomacy to bolster Senegal’s global position and economic ties. In July 2025, he visited Togo and Liberia on July 25 and attended the 50th anniversary of Cabo Verde’s independence on July 5.

Further diplomatic activity included an official visit to Japan on August 18, 2025, and a visit to Paris on August 27, 2025. In September 2025, President Faye attended the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, starting September 23. During his time in New York, he met with the Senegalese community in the United States and the Crown Prince of Kuwait on September 25, and met with his Kosovar counterpart on the same date.

on September 26, 2025, President Faye and Ghanaian President John Mahama co-chaired a ceremony focused on memory and reparations, further extending Senegal’s diplomatic reach within the African continent.

These efforts in both domestic institutional reform and international relations characterize the first two years of President Faye’s administration, as he continues to advocate for a stable and unified national front to support economic transformation.
