A senior Golden Retriever named Tequila has captured widespread attention for her independent behavior while waiting at the veterinarian’s office, where she was seen carrying her leash in her mouth and walking herself through the waiting room during a visit for an ear infection.

The incident, documented in a video posted by her owners on Instagram under the handle @ourdailydoseoftequila, shows Tequila pacing the clinic’s waiting area with purpose, inspecting shelves of pet food and returning to her human for help adjusting her leash when it became too long to carry comfortably.

According to her owners, the behavior is not trained or staged but reflects Tequila’s natural inclination to manage her own routine, a trait consistent with the breed’s well-documented tendency to carry objects in their mouths.

Golden Retrievers are frequently observed carrying items such as toys, shoes, or clothing, a behavior linked to their historical role as gun dogs bred to retrieve game without damaging it. This instinct often translates into a desire to hold or transport objects in their mouths, even in non-working contexts.

While the American Kennel Club notes that mouth-carrying is common and generally harmless in the breed, veterinarians caution that excessive or compulsive chewing or carrying of non-food items should be monitored, particularly in older dogs, to rule out underlying anxiety, dental discomfort, or cognitive changes.

In Tequila’s case, her owners emphasized that the visit was routine — related to an ear infection — and that her calm, self-directed walk through the clinic was a reflection of her personality rather than a sign of distress.

The video, which has garnered over 23,000 likes across social media platforms, has been shared by multiple outlets including DogTime, Yahoo Life, and AOL, with viewers highlighting her poise and apparent comfort in navigating the veterinary environment independently.

Animal behavior experts note that allowing dogs to express natural behaviors in low-stress settings, such as carrying a leash or exploring a safe space, can contribute to their sense of agency and emotional well-being, particularly in unfamiliar or potentially stressful environments like veterinary clinics.

However, they also advise that such behaviors should be supervised to ensure safety, especially in clinical settings where access to medications, chemicals, or equipment could pose risks if a dog were to pick up or ingest inappropriate items.

For Tequila, her owners reported that she paused at her father’s knees to have her leash shortened, demonstrating an awareness of her own needs and a willingness to seek assistance when necessary — a balance of independence and social engagement that resonated with observers.

The episode underscores how individual differences in temperament and breed-typical behaviors can manifest in everyday situations, offering insight into canine cognition and the ways dogs adapt to human environments while maintaining aspects of their innate instincts.
