After approving a ‘bad budget’ as the mass transit provider faces a a $213 million structural budget deficit. SEPTA has announced a new effort intended to help raise needed funding.
It’s ending free parking at SEPTA-owned lots and garages starting next week.
“Collecting parking fees 24/7 is another example of how we are doing everything we can to generate revenue during this funding crisis,” said SEPTA General Manager Scott Sauer in a statement on the decision. “We are committed to finding innovative ways to make this organization more efficient without compromising safety or reliability for our customers.”
SEPTA announced on Wednesday that, starting Monday, July 7, 2025, the mass transit provider will charge for parking at all of its lots and garages, as well as at 35 additional locations.
After four years of providing free parking, SEPTA brought back parking fees on weekdays last year.
The daily rate to park at SEPTA-owned lots is $2 and, at its three garages at the Frankford Transportation Center, Norristown and Lansdale, it’s $4.
SEPTA officials said that the parking fees help the utility to offset parking lot maintenance costs.
Commuters, officials said, can pay through the SEPTA Park app or at kiosks in place at SEPTA-owned lots and garages.
