American tennis icon Serena Williams has been named the recipient of the prestigious Princess of Asturias
Sports Award for 2025. The Princess of Asturias Foundation bestows this honor, one of eight international
awards, in its 45th year. Williams stood out among roughly 30 candidates from 13 countries.
The Princess of Asturias of Sports Award celebrates individuals whose careers exemplify how sports promote
human development and benefit society. Serena Williams’ impact on tennis and her broader influence made her a
clear choice.
Born in Saginaw, Michigan, in 1981, Serena Williams is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players
of all time. Her career boasts numerous accolades, now including the Princess of Asturias de los Deportes 2025.
Her achievements include breaking glass ceilings and setting new standards in the world of tennis.
Williams holds an Open Era record of 23 Grand Slam singles titles. She achieved the remarkable feat of
winning all four major tournaments consecutively in two separate periods: 2002-2003 and 2014-2015. Alongside
her sister Venus, she secured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles. Additionally,she claimed two mixed doubles titles
with Max Mirnyi.
Serena Williams also held the No.1 WTA ranking for 319 weeks. She shares the record with Steffi Graf for
