Berlin Demands End to European Escalation

During their meeting at the UN, Wadephul urged Moscow to abandon its path of escalation toward Europe. The German official indicated that Berlin remained open to improving bilateral relations if the Kremlin demonstrated a genuine willingness to end its war in Ukraine, according to an Associated Press report citing a German delegation official.

Lavrov dismissed the overture during a subsequent press conference.

This initiative by the Minister of Foreign Affairs has brought nothing new. He simply repeated his official public position condemning Russia. It is up to you to judge whether we can speak of dialogue or not.

Leipzig Airport Drone Attack Triggers Retaliation

The high-level clash follows a severe breakdown in bilateral ties that began in early September. Berlin accused Moscow of orchestrating a drone attack earlier in the year at the Leipzig/Halle airport.

In response to what Berlin termed a hybrid attack, Wadephul announced retaliatory measures including the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian cultural centre in Berlin. Germany also planned to tighten border controls for Russian citizens and ramp up pressure on Russia’s shadow fleet.

The Russian embassy in Germany rejected the accusations through Ambassador Sergei Netchaiev, calling them unfounded, absurd, and contrary to common sense. A diplomatic statement warned that the German measures constituted an unprecedented escalation that would carry consequences, adding that the German government would bear full responsibility. Addressing the incident at the UN, Lavrov minimized the event as an unclaimed drone and asserted that Germany had immediately claimed it was Russian.

From the podium of the UN General Assembly, Lavrov criticized German Chancellor Merz over defense policy ambitions.

Lavrov further claimed that the United States had dismantled the European security system and fostered a Russophobic regime in Kyiv, accusing the West of attempting to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia. He warned that such ambitions would drive warmongers into a strategic impasse.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in a video address that the Kremlin was making no preparations to conclude the conflict. Zelensky noted that Russian leadership continually relies on excuses to avoid meetings, talks, or a cessation of hostilities, deliberately seeking pretexts to prolong the war.
