Bus and Car Collision in Bellevue, Washington Leaves One Dead, Multiple Injured
BELLEVUE, Wash. – A head-on collision involving a King County Metro bus and a passenger vehicle on Monday morning resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, according to the Bellevue Police Department. The crash occurred near the intersection of 156th Avenue Northeast and Northup Way at approximately 8:00 a.m.
Police investigation indicates the bus was turning left onto northbound 156th Avenue Northeast when it collided with a car traveling in the opposite direction. The 81-year-old passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening and was transported to Overlake Hospital for treatment.
There were no reported injuries to the bus driver or any of the passengers on board the Metro bus. Twelve passengers and the 29-year-old bus driver were treated for injuries at the scene, according to reports. The extent of those injuries has not been released.
The roadway was closed for over three hours while collision investigators processed the scene. Authorities advised drivers in the area to seek alternate routes during the investigation. Police have stated that, at this time, We find no indications of impairment or excessive speed contributing to the collision, but the cause of the car entering the oncoming lane remains unclear.
Approximately 50 emergency personnel responded to the incident. The accident site remained closed for around eight hours.
This incident is the latest in a series of recent bus-related accidents. Just last week, a Port Authority bus crash in New York forced the closure of part of a terminal and caused significant delays at the Lincoln Tunnel, injuring 17 people – 15 passengers and two employees. Twelve sustained minor injuries, and one required hospitalization. A METRO bus in Houston flipped after a collision with another vehicle, resulting in 14 people being hospitalized. In New York, five people were killed and dozens injured in a tour bus crash on Friday evening.
