Serve Up Your Dreams: Young Tennis Stars Wanted to Take to the Court
Get Ready to Serve: Love of Tennis Event Coming to Bucklands Beach
Calling all tennis enthusiasts! The Love of Tennis event is set to take place at Bucklands Beach on September 8, and it’s an opportunity you won’t want to miss.
Tennis New Zealand’s annual event will see clubs across the country opening their courts to all competitors, and Bucklands Beach Tennis Club is no exception. The club’s president, Fiona Macleod, said the event would be combined with the club’s annual community open day, which would be held from 10am to 2pm.
“It’s all about promoting our sport and providing a fantastic free opportunity for the local community to come and try out tennis, or for those who have played before but are not currently members of the club to return to the courts,” Macleod said.
The event will offer free coaching sessions for both adult and child beginners, loan out equipment and balls, and provide social tennis for those who already know how to play. Additionally, the club will be offering an excellent discount on first-year membership fees for those who sign up in September.
Julia Sim, a long-time coach at Bucklands Beach Club, has witnessed several Tennis for Love Community Days and has seen firsthand the impact it can have on people’s lives. “A lot of people play a few times at some point in their lives, but don’t know how to get into the game as an adult,” Sim said.
“Or, they’ve never really tried it but want to give it a try. Regardless, they all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet other new and veteran players and get expert help on how to play, while having fun and getting some exercise in the fresh air.”
Sim, a former professional tennis player and Olympic champion in Zimbabwe, trains people of all ages and abilities and is particularly passionate about introducing the sport of tennis to newcomers. She runs fun courses for adults from October each year and also offers Junior Instructor Courses for 5 to 18-year-olds during the summer months.
Tennis New Zealand said clubs across the country had many plans for their Love Tennis events, including on-site prizes, free refreshments and barbecues, a lolly scramble, and other fun games for individuals and families to take part in. Visitors who attend a Love Tennis event at any tennis club could also be entered into a draw for a trip to next year’s Australian Open.
