Finland – Kalle Rovanperä of Toyota Gazoo Racing has taken the led after the initial stages of the Finnish Rally, showcasing a dominant performance. The reigning world champion secured the top two stage times,demonstrating his prowess on home soil. Though, the rally has also presented meaningful challenges for other competitors, including the Latvian crew of Mārtiņš Sesks and Renārs Francis.
Sesks and Francis Face Mixed Fortunes in Finland
The Latvian duo, competing in their Ford Puma Rally1 car prepared by M-Sport Ford, has experienced a mixed start to the Finnish event. After finishing seventh in the opening stage,they encountered difficulties in the second,fourth,and fifth stages,recording the ninth best time in each. This places their crew in ninth position overall after five stages, though they remain the fastest among the M-Sport Ford contingent.
This rally marks the final of six scheduled WRC stages for the Sesks and Francis crew this season. Their previous WRC outings have seen a sixth-place finish in the Swedish Rally, 15th in Portugal and Greece, a retirement due to a crash in Sardinia, and an eighth-place finish in Estonia.Earlier in the season, the Latvian team achieved a notable victory in the fourth round of the European Rally Championship (ERC) in Poland in mid-June.
Sesks’ crew made their WRC debut last season, participating in three events.they secured fifth place in Poland, seventh in the WRC’s first-ever Latvian rally in July (losing a podium spot on the final stage), and continued in the Chilean rally for practice purposes after an incident.
Rovanperä’s Dominance and Championship Standings
Kalle Rovanperä’s strong start has put him at the top of the overall standings, holding a narrow 4.4-second lead over Frenchman Adrien Fourmaux of Hyundai Shell Mobis. Another Toyota Gazoo Racing driver, Sami Pajari, also performed well, achieving the top two stage times in two of the four day stages.
In the broader World Rally Championship context, Ott Tänak of Estonia leads the overall standings with 162 points after eight rounds.He is closely followed by British driver Elfyn Evans, who has 161 points. The Sesks crew currently sits 13th in the overall WRC standings with 12 points from five rounds. The WRC season comprises 14 stages, with Thierry Neuville of Belgium crowned champion last season.
Rally Schedule and Broadcast Data
The Finnish Rally continues with six more stages scheduled for friday. The competition will resume early on Saturday at 8:00 AM, with the final stages commencing on Sunday at 10:35 AM. Rally enthusiasts can follow the action live on the television channel “Go3 Sport 1”.Over the four days of competition,rally crews will navigate 20 special stages covering a total distance of 307.22 kilometers. A total of 66 crews have entered the Finnish rally, with 11 of them competing in the premier Rally1 class cars.
