Type 42 Destroyer: A Guided Missile Destroyer of the Royal Navy
The Type 42 destroyer, also known as the Sheffield class, is a class of guided missile destroyers of the Royal Navy. A total of 14 ships of this class were built and deployed from Batches 1 to 3 as the mainstay of the Royal Navy’s maritime forces. The Type 42 destroyer played a significant role in the Falklands War in 1982, with five Batch 1 ships, including Sheffield and Coventry, being deployed and successfully shooting down seven aircraft with the Sea Dart fleet air defence missile system.
The Type 42 destroyer’s propulsion system utilized the COGOG (Combined Gas or Gas) system, which combined two types of gas turbine engines. This allowed the ships to reach a maximum speed of 30 knots. The main armament of the Type 42 destroyer consisted of a Sea Dart Fleet Air Defense Missile System, two triple single torpedo tubes, and a single 114 mm 55-caliber gun.
