The collision occurred at 3:39 a.m. on Saturday after a Volkswagen Passat traveling in the wrong direction struck a marked police vehicle going the right way.

Five members of the public inside the Volkswagen Passat and two police officers in the marked vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, Cleveland Police said. Authorities confirmed that the families of those identified have been informed and are receiving specialist support. The North East Ambulance Service deployed 14 units to the dual carriageway following reports of a three-vehicle collision. The response included ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a hazardous area response team, and a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance Service. A spokesperson for the ambulance service stated that despite the best efforts of everyone attending, a number of patients died at the scene.
