Jess McClain achieved a historic performance at the 2026 Boston Marathon, recording the fastest time ever by an American woman in the race with a finish of 2:20:49, which also set a new United States course record.
Her time placed her fifth overall in the women’s division, marking the best finish by an American woman at the Boston Marathon in history. McClain, who was born Jessica Tonn on February 15, 1992, in Paradise Valley, Arizona, has established herself as one of the nation’s top distance runners through years of collegiate and professional success.
During her time at Stanford University, McClain earned seven NCAA Division I All-American honors in cross country and track and field, reflecting her consistency and excellence across multiple distance events. She graduated with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Stanford before turning professional in 2015.
Since turning pro, McClain has competed under the Brooks sponsorship and has steadily improved her personal bests across various distances. Her 2026 Boston Marathon time of 2:20:49 represents a new personal best in the marathon, surpassing her previous achievements in the 5000 meters (15:09.50), 10,000 meters (30:59.71) and half marathon (1:08:37), all set in 2025.
McClain’s performance in Boston was part of a broader American achievement in the men’s race as well, where Zouhair Talbi, a Moroccan-born American runner, also recorded the fastest time ever by an American man at the Boston Marathon, finishing fifth in his division. Both athletes’ performances highlighted a strong showing for U.S. Distance runners on one of the sport’s most prestigious stages.
Her accomplishment builds on a career marked by steady progression, including a fourth-place finish at the 2024 United States Olympic Trials in Orlando, Florida. McClain continues to be coached by David Roche, who began working with her in 2025, and remains affiliated with Brooks as her professional sponsor.
