Torrential Downpours Cripple Killarney

The extreme weather prompted a brief Status Orange rain warning for Dublin and multiple Yellow alerts nationwide, according to reports from The Irish Times and RTÉ.

Kerry County Council reported severe conditions in Killarney.

Emergency Road Closures and N22 Impact

Kerry County Council stated that many parts of Killarney experienced severe flooding following torrential downpours during the evening hours.

These included the N22, which was closed at the bottom of Pike Hill near Killarney.

Park Road and Countess Road also experienced significant water accumulation. Fire brigade crews had largely cleared the flooding by 10 PM and stood down their operations, while officials advised motorists to travel with care.

Met Éireann Issues Status Orange and Yellow Warnings

Met Éireann issued a Status Yellow rain warning that remained in effect until 6 AM across several counties. The affected areas included Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Dublin, Waterford, and Cork.

The forecaster warned of heavy rain spells carrying a possibility of thunderstorms, creating difficult traveling conditions.

Additionally, a short-lived Status Orange rainfall warning took effect for Dublin from 10:30 PM until 3 AM. It warned residents of very heavy rainfall before being cancelled shortly after 2 AM.

UK Met Office Alerts and Festival Preparations

Across the border, the UK Met Office issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for counties Antrim, Armagh, and Down, remaining active until 6 AM. The UK forecaster warned that heavy rain and potential lightning strikes could lead to localized flooding and minor damage to buildings or structures.

The unsettled conditions coincide with preparations for the Electric Picnic festival in Stradbally, County Laois. Tens of thousands of attendees face a mix of bright intervals and returning rain.
