Severe Snowfall Hits Ireland: Status Orange Warnings and Travel Disruptions Ahead
Heavy Snowfall Expected in Ireland
Ireland will experience heavy snowfall over the next 24 hours. Met Éireann has issued warnings for multiple counties. A status orange snow warning is in effect for Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, and Waterford starting at midnight. Significant snowfall accumulations are likely.
A yellow alert for snow and ice is also active for 17 counties, including Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Wicklow, Munster, Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon until 12 PM on Thursday.
Heavy rain is moving in from the south. It will change to sleet and snow tonight, continuing into Thursday morning. Accumulations of 5 cm or more are expected in 12 hours. Areas in the west, south-east, and midlands may see lower snowfall, between 1-5 cm in the same period.
Met Éireann warns of significant travel disruptions and difficult road conditions on Thursday, especially during the morning rush hour. A nationwide status-yellow warning for low temperatures and ice is also effective until 12 PM on Thursday.
Advice for Travelers
Keith Leonard from the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management advises travelers to allow extra time for their journeys. Drivers should remain cautious and aware of road conditions. He encourages checking on vulnerable neighbors during severe weather.
All school transport services will run Thursday, but disruptions may occur. Schools might assess local conditions and could decide to close if unsafe.
Met Éireann is tracking another low-pressure system that could bring further unsettled weather over the weekend. A storm has not yet been named, but forecasters are monitoring it closely.
