Severe storms driven by powerful supercells swept across the Czech Republic from the west and east, leaving thousands of residents without electricity, halting train lines with mud, and prompting expanded weather warnings, according to reports from TN.cz, Novinky, CNN Prima NEWS, iDNES.cz, and Život v Česku.
Power Outages and Structural Damage in Southern Moravia
Approximately 4,500 supply points on the south of Moravia lost power as fierce storms battered the region, according to data from energy supplier E.ON cited by CNN Prima NEWS. Company spokesperson Lubomír Budný stated that falling trees and heavy branches knocked down wires and damaged parts of the distribution infrastructure, hitting the Břeclav and Hodonín districts the hardest.
Regional fire crews recorded dozens of emergency interventions. Firefighters in southern Moravia responded to roughly 30 incidents by 17:30 and doubled that figure by 19:00, according to their updates on Threads reported by CNN Prima NEWS. Crews cleared fallen trees and debris in Klentnici and Dolní Dunajovice on the Břeclav side, as well as in the Lesná and Líšeň neighborhoods of Brno. High winds also ripped a sheet-metal roof off a building in Zaječí, while another detached roof blocked a roadway and downed a section of power lines in Podivín, as detailed by CNN Prima NEWS.
Supercells Cross the Border from Bavaria
While eastern regions battled high winds and heavy precipitation, a second severe weather system entered the country from the west. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) reported that a supercell moved from Bavaria toward the Rozvadov area and the Bohemian Forest space, carrying potential for large hail exceeding two centimeters and destructive wind gusts.
On the Vysočina railway network, storms triggered a travel crisis on two local routes. České dráhy announced on their website that train operations were suspended due to thick mud deposits across tracks, forcing the implementation of replacement bus services between Batelov and Horní Cerekev on the Havlíčkův Brod to Veselí nad Lužnicí line, alongside disrupted tracks between Kostelec u Jihlavy and Třešť.
Expanded Weather Warnings Issued for Friday and Saturday
Meteorologists updated their active weather alerts on Thursday, removing warnings for northeastern Bohemia while extending high-level threat levels for Friday and the night into Saturday. ČHMÚ forecaster Filip Smola noted that the primary hazards will involve torrential downpours producing around 40 millimeters of rain in short windows, which will eventually transition into steady rain that could push cumulative totals near 70 millimeters alongside wind gusts reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour.
The elevated warning zone takes effect on Friday at 16:00, blanketing a wide corridor stretching from South Bohemia through the Central Bohemian Region and the Vysočina Highlands up to the Pardubice, Hradec Králové, and parts of the Liberec regions. Neighboring territories across parts of the Plzeň, Ústí nad Labem, Olomouc, and South Moravian regions face slightly lower storm intensities, though forecasters warned that localized hail remains possible.
