Flash Floods and High Winds Batter Loire-Atlantique

Only the coastal areas escaped the worst of the weather, regional reports show.

The severe weather system extended far beyond Loire-Atlantique. It triggered extensive emergency responses and property damage across central and southern France.

Overnight Mobilization in the Gard Department

In the Gard department, roughly one hundred firefighters and thirty vehicles mobilized overnight. They tackled property and vegetation fires, localized flooding, and downed trees, according to the local fire and rescue service, Sdis 30.

Emergency crews also managed road accidents and secured damaged buildings following the intense storm activity.

Tornado Strikes Pomas and Injures Dozens

Sdis 30 reported that specialized cynotechnic search teams with rescue dogs were dispatched from the Gard to Pomas in the Aude department. They reinforced local rescue operations after a severe tornado struck during the storm.

The twister damaged approximately 300 homes and injured 41 people. Of those injured, 15 required hospital treatment.

Summer Storms Deliver Hail and Rain to Touraine

Further north in Touraine, an intense storm struck between 18:00 and 23:00 on July 15, 2026. It dropped heavy rain and hail after a prolonged dry spell, according to the Service Départemental d’Incendie et de Secours de Touraine (SDIS37).

The storms generated numerous calls resulting in 80 separate interventions across Indre-et-Loire. Crews responded to flooding, downed trees, and fires sparked by fallen electrical lines.

Streets Turn to Streams in Tours

In Tours, sudden downpours and hail transformed central streets into temporary streams within minutes. Large plane trees along Avenue Proudhon and Boulevard Herteloup lost heavy branches during the onslaught.

Municipal workers deployed immediately to inspect structural damage and clear blocked roadways. Meanwhile, residents across Tours and Vernou-sur-Brenne recorded sudden 10-degree temperature drops alongside the heavy hail.
