Chicago residents are bracing for potential severe storms Thursday, with the possibility of tornadoes. While the most significant threat has shifted south, isolated tornadoes remain possible, particularly in Kankakee, Newton, and Jasper counties, according to meteorologist David Yeomans.

Yeomans, who is tracking the developing weather system, indicated that an accelerating cold front is pushing the strongest storm activity away from the immediate Chicago area. However, he cautioned that the risk of tornadoes hasn’t entirely dissipated.

“Some good news today as the accelerating cold front appears to shunt the threat of strong tornadoes south of our area,” Yeomans stated on Facebook. “While an isolated tornado is still possible Thursday evening, mainly in Kankakee/Newton/Jasper counties, the tornado risk has gone down areawide.”

Multiple sources confirm the potential for severe weather. A YouTube video posted by Yeomans highlights the storm risk, and news outlets including CBS News are reporting on the possibility of tornadoes.

The storm system is expected to bring more than just the threat of tornadoes. Other severe weather hazards, such as large hail and damaging winds, are also possible. Residents are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and to have a plan in place in case severe weather develops.

David Yeomans is providing ongoing updates on the situation, and his forecasts are available on his Facebook page and through CBS Chicago broadcasts. Carl Lam, a new meteorologist, has also joined the CBS Chicago team and will be contributing to the coverage.

The National Weather Service has not yet issued any specific warnings or watches for the Chicago area as of Thursday afternoon, but residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and be prepared to take action if conditions worsen.

The most concerning time frame for severe weather appears to be Thursday evening. While the overall risk has decreased, the possibility of an isolated tornado remains, particularly in the southern counties mentioned by Yeomans.

Residents in Kankakee, Newton, and Jasper counties should pay particularly close attention to weather updates and be prepared to seek shelter if a tornado warning is issued. It is important to have a safe room identified and to know what to do in the event of a tornado.
