Severe Winter Forecast for Kashmir: La Niña Brings Harsh Cold and Heavy Precipitation
Kashmir is experiencing early signs of winter, with changes in the weather patterns. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts harsh conditions this winter, including heavy rainfall and extended cold spells due to a La Niña event.
Jammu and Kashmir currently have foggy mornings, with decreasing maximum and minimum temperatures. Dr. Mukhtar from the IMD in Srinagar expects the La Niña effects to start around mid-December, bringing significant rainfall and colder temperatures.
La Niña occurs in the Pacific Ocean and causes cooler sea surface temperatures. This phenomenon affects weather globally and often results in wetter conditions in Southeast Asia and colder winters in regions like South Asia.
The IMD notes that this year’s La Niña is developing over the Pacific, with its influence expected to increase. It will likely lead to more cold weather and precipitation in Kashmir and northern India.
Dr. Mukhtar explained that La Niña alters atmospheric patterns, causing more rain and colder winters. Previous events in 2018-19 and 2021-22 resulted in heavy snowfall in Kashmir. This year, the likelihood of similar weather patterns is high, suggesting a colder winter than recent years.
Kashmir is familiar with freezing winters, making it susceptible to La Niña effects. Dr. Mukhtar pointed out the differences from last year’s El Niño, which brought less precipitation. This year’s La Niña is expected to deliver a traditional Kashmiri winter, marked by significant snowfall and longer cold spells.
