Severe Winter Weather Grips Eastern US: Arctic Chill and Heavy Snowfall Forecast
Severe Cold and Snow Impacting Eastern US
A wave of Arctic air has settled over much of the eastern United States, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season. This frigid air mass moved south from the northern Plains and Midwest and is expected to remain throughout the weekend.
Temperatures across a wide area, from Minnesota to Texas, may drop 15 to 25 degrees. This cold air interacting with the warm Great Lakes is causing significant lake-effect snow in those regions. Weather alerts are in effect for nearly 10 million people, with snow accumulations expected to reach 6 to 12 inches. In some areas, total snowfall could reach up to 4 to 6 feet.
Cities like Chicago, Indianapolis, and Atlanta are set to experience temperatures similar to those typical in mid-January. Nearly 70% of the US population may see temperatures drop below freezing in the coming days.
Saturday morning will be particularly cold in the northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with wind chills plunging below zero. Conditions could lead to risks of hypothermia and frostbite. Wind chills in parts of North Dakota may range from negative 30 to negative 40 degrees.
Near the Great Lakes, states like Michigan and New York are on alert for lake-effect snow, leading to whiteout conditions and hazardous travel. In western New York, residents of Watertown could face up to 70 inches of snow, prompting a state of emergency in Jefferson County.
Northeastern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania are also preparing for heavy snowfall. Authorities warn that conditions could make travel difficult or impossible. Heavy snow has already led to the closure of several highways in New York and Pennsylvania.
In sports news, the Buffalo Bills are scheduled to play the San Francisco 49ers in Orchard Park, New York, on Sunday, with temperatures around 26 degrees. Officials expect heavy snow to subside by game time, but estimates suggest 20 to 30 inches could accumulate at the stadium. Despite snow concerns, game officials indicate that the game will proceed as planned.
