La Liga Matches Postponed Amidst Storm and Pitch Concerns

Two La Liga matches scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2026, have been postponed due to adverse weather conditions and concerns over pitch quality. The matches affected are Sevilla versus Girona and Rayo Vallecano versus Real Oviedo.

The postponement of the Sevilla-Girona match was announced due to an “orange warning” for rain and strong winds affecting several provinces in Spain, according to LaLiga. The Andalusian Government made the decision, citing safety concerns related to the ongoing storm impacting the region. The match has been rescheduled for at 9:15 Eastern Time, 8:15 in Mexico, and 6:15 Pacific Time, and will be played at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium.

The Rayo Vallecano versus Real Oviedo match was postponed due to the condition of the pitch at Vallecas Stadium. Rayo had recently completed a full replacement of the pitch, but heavy rainfall in Madrid prevented it from reaching a playable condition. LaLiga stated that “at the current time, the playing field does not meet the necessary guarantees to hold the match in safe conditions.” A new date for this fixture has not yet been confirmed.

Real Oviedo expressed its “deep discontent” over the postponement, calling the situation “shameful” and stating it would take “whatever regulatory actions are appropriate.” The club emphasized the disruption to their preparations and the impact on their relegation battle, currently sitting at the bottom of the LaLiga table with 16 points. Rayo Vallecano is in 18th place with 22 points.

Roberto Suárez, Real Oviedo’s sporting director, stated that the decision broke “rules of the game” and highlighted concerns about the integrity of the competition. He added that the situation was “shameful” and indicated a disregard for established protocols.

LaLiga acknowledged Rayo Vallecano’s efforts to prepare the pitch for the match, but ultimately determined that the conditions were unsafe for play. Both clubs and LaLiga reportedly exhausted all available options before making the decision to postpone.

The State Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for all Andalusian provinces, with an orange level alert in Seville, Cádiz, Huelva, Almería and Granada, raising concerns about potential complications with access and movement throughout the day.

The postponement of these matches leaves only two La Liga games played on Saturday: Barcelona versus Mallorca and Real Sociedad versus Elche.
