Sex Education Gaps Leave Students Vulnerable to Abuse

Sex Education Gaps Leave Students Vulnerable to Abuse

January 23, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Special spokesperson of the group, spread disinformation against the bill, and pointedly refuse any changes, ultimately promoting ignorance and further increasing the risk of sexual abuse," she said. They alleged that UNESCO and WHO guidelines recommend teaching children under four about childhood masturbation.

Religious Sen. Risa Hontiveros, who authored the bill, and Education Department (DepEd) have released statements refuting these claims. DepEd stated it didn’t entirely follow international standards, and its curriculum for comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) had been tailored to fit local contexts.

Advocates fear that the current gaps in sex education leave students vulnerable to predators. Kate said, "Minors continue to be sexually harassed and abused even in supposedly safe spaces." The group pointed out that the current education system’s inability to properly inform and empower young people about their sexuality puts them at risk.

Rights watchdog Human Rights Watch echoed these concerns, saying misinformation about the bill "will harm children." Senior researcher Carlos Conde noted, "The bill aims to protect children from unwanted teen pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and sexual abuse by equipping them with the right, age-appropriate education about their sexuality."

The United Nations also urged the public to verify information on CSE, which DepEd rolled out in 2018. The UN noted, "Research shows that too many young people still make the transition from childhood to adulthood receiving inaccurate or incomplete information about sexual and reproductive health, leaving them vulnerable to coercion, sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy."

Conde called on the president to correct his statement and continue supporting the program, stating that he had previously backed the measure.

Teh Urgent Need for Complete Sex Education in Schools

The chilling reality of unchecked sexual abuse in our schools demands a resolute response. The assertion that protecting children’s “purity” justifies the suppression of comprehensive sex education is not only ethically dubious but demonstrably harmful. By failing too equip young people with the knowledge and tools to recognize, understand, and navigate the complexities of sexuality, we are failing them.

False narratives and fear mongering, often disguised as moral righteousness, only serve to perpetuate a culture of silence and vulnerability. It is time to stand united against thes harmful tropes and demand a future where our schools prioritize safety and empowerment for all students. Comprehensive sex education is not about promoting promiscuity, it is about promoting informed consent, healthy relationships, and safeguarding children from abuse. Let us champion the inclusion of evidence-based programs in our schools, empowering young people to make informed choices and breaking the cycle of silence that enables sexual abuse to thrive.
