Sexual dimorphism, the biological distinction between sexes, plays a crucial role in metabolism. This leads to differences in body composition, metabolic rates, energy source utilization, and hormonal control, especially during fasting, feeding, and physical activity.
Previous research indicates that men tend to favor carbohydrate metabolism, while women favor lipid metabolism. To explore thes nuances,researchers developed a sex-specific computer model of metabolism across multiple organs. The goal was to quantify how men and women differ in carbohydrate and fat utilization.
In the study, participants consumed mixed meals after fasting for 12 to 14 hours. The meals varied in composition, including combinations of 96 g of carbohydrates and 33 g of fat, 139 g of carbohydrates and 17 g of fat, 58 g of carbohydrates and 27.7 g of fat, and 289 g of carbohydrates and 45 g of fat. Researchers then assessed the participants’ postprandial and postabsorptive states.
The results showed no important differences in glucose, insulin, or lactate responses between men and women.However, female models exhibited heightened lipolytic responses, confirmed by higher levels of circulating free fatty acids and glycerol during fasting.
Anita Layton, a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Waterloo, noted the findings.
“As women have more body fat on average than men, you would think that they would burn less fat for energy, but they don’t. The results of the model suggest that women store more fat immediately after a meal but also burn more fat during a fast,” Layton said.
Therefore, women might benefit more from a breakfast higher in fats, such as omelets and avocados, while men may respond better to higher carbohydrate meals like oatmeal and pancakes. Consider this the next time you’re at a diner.
