SFSP 2026: Summer Food Service Program Reimbursement Rates | California CDE

February 25, 2026 Dr. Jennifer Chen Health

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released the reimbursement rates for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) for 2026. These rates, effective January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2026, will govern payments for breakfast, lunch, supper, and snacks served through the program. The announcement, initially made on February 4, 2026, provides crucial financial support to organizations working to combat food insecurity during the summer months.

The SFSP is a federally funded program designed to ensure children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. It addresses the gap in food access that many low-income children experience during the summer, when they are away from the school meal programs. Sponsors, such as schools, community organizations, and summer camps, receive reimbursement based on the number of eligible meals served.

The 2026 rates reflect adjustments for changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), as mandated by the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act. According to the USDA, these adjustments represent an average 3.7 percent increase from the previous year’s rates. This increase is intended to help sponsors offset rising food and operational costs, ensuring they can continue to provide high-quality meals to children in need.

The reimbursement process is designed to be straightforward. Sponsors receive payment based on a “meals times rates” calculation, eliminating the need for complex cost comparisons. While a combined rate simplifies accounting, it’s built upon separate operating and administrative rates, each adjusted differently for inflation. This allows for flexibility in how sponsors allocate funds to cover allowable costs, regardless of specific cost categories.

Detailed information regarding the specific reimbursement rates for each meal type (breakfast, lunch, supper, and snacks) can be found on the California Department of Education’s 2026–27 Child Nutrition Program Reimbursement Rates web page. This resource provides a comprehensive overview of the rates and related guidelines for California sponsors.

Organizations interested in participating in the SFSP or seeking further clarification on the reimbursement rates can contact the Summer Nutrition Programs and Grants Unit via email at SFSP@cde.ca.gov. The Nutrition Services Division is also available to answer questions at 800-952-5609.

The USDA’s annual adjustment to SFSP reimbursement rates is a critical step in maintaining the program’s effectiveness. By accounting for inflation and streamlining the reimbursement process, the USDA aims to support sponsors in their efforts to provide consistent, nutritious meals to children throughout the summer. This program plays a vital role in mitigating food insecurity and promoting the health and well-being of vulnerable children during a time when access to food can be particularly challenging.

The Summer Food Service Program is part of a broader network of federal meal programs designed to address food insecurity among children. These programs recognize that adequate nutrition is essential for healthy development and academic success. By ensuring children have access to nutritious meals year-round, these initiatives contribute to improved health outcomes and educational attainment.
