American sprint star Sha’Carri Richardson won the 2026 Stawell Gift on Monday, April 6, 2026, securing victory in the 144th edition of the historic handicap race. Richardson, starting from scratch, overcame the field in a 120-meter sprint on grass in the rural town of Stawell, located approximately 200km north-west of Melbourne, Australia.
Richardson crossed the finish line in a record time of 13.15 seconds. She finished ahead of Australia’s Charlotte Nielsen, who clocked 13.20 seconds, and Chiara Santiglia, who finished in 13.36 seconds. The victory earned the 26-year-old a prize of 40,000 Australian dollars, which is approximately $27,500.
Race Dynamics and Performance
The final was contested as a handicap race, meaning athletes start at different positions based on their ability. Richardson started at 0m, known as starting off scratch
. Nielsen began the race with a nine-metre handicap and maintained the lead for the majority of the distance before Richardson closed the gap in the final metres.
Richardson caught the field at the 90-meter mark before pulling away to secure the win. Following the race, Richardson told Seven Network television that she focused on being patient during the first 10 meters as instructed by her coach and noted that she realized she was going to win once she passed the 90-meter mark.
The final was preceded by a false start from 17-year-old Grace Crowe in the lane adjacent to Richardson. Crowe was required to move her blocks back one metre to 3.25m, which provided Richardson with a closer target to chase during the race.
Overcoming Semi-Final Challenges
Richardson’s path to the final nearly ended during the semi-finals earlier on April 6, 2026. She almost failed to qualify after easing up and standing tall instead of dipping at the finish line. She managed to book her place in the final by pipping Halle Martin by seven thousandths of a second.
Despite the near-miss in the semi-finals, Richardson made no errors in the final, running through the line powerfully to become only the third woman to win the Stawell Gift from scratch.
Career Context and Other Participants
Richardson entered the competition as one of the fastest women in the world. Her professional achievements include:

- The 100-meter title at the 2023 World Championships.

.
The event also featured former world champion Christian Coleman, who was the marquee name for the men’s draw. However, Coleman failed to qualify for the men’s final after finishing sixth in his semi-final with a time of 12.48 seconds.
Following her victory, Richardson celebrated with fans and her boyfriend, Christian Coleman. Reports indicate the pair remain in a relationship despite a domestic violence charge filed against Richardson in July 2025.
