Shadows Over the Ballot Box: Russia’s Sinister Election Meddling Exposed
Georgian President Accuses Russia of Interfering in Parliamentary Elections
Georgian President Saloma Zurabishvili has accused Russia of interfering in the country’s parliamentary elections, which took place on Saturday. Zurabishvili, who has been at odds with the government, claimed that Russia had launched a “special campaign“ to influence the outcome of the elections.
“We are witnesses and victims of a special Russian campaign, a modern type of hybrid war against the Georgian people,” Zurabishvili said, without providing further details.
The ruling party, Georgian Dream, has been accused of seeking to bring the country closer to Moscow. The party won the elections with 53% of the vote, according to preliminary results.
Call to Protest
Zurabishvili has called on supporters to take to the streets on Monday to protest the election results, which she claims were rigged. The opposition has also refused to accept the results, citing numerous irregularities during the voting process.
The Coalition for Change, the main opposition bloc, received 11% of the vote. However, the party has announced that it will not take up its seats in parliament due to concerns over electoral fraud.
“We will not give legitimacy to stealing votes from the Georgian people, we are rejecting our parliamentary mandates,” said Nana Malashia of the Coalition for Change.
Electoral Irregularities
Both Georgian and international observers have reported numerous irregularities during the elections, including voter intimidation, pressure on authorities, violence against observers, vote buying, and multiple voting.
The European Union has called on Georgia to investigate these allegations quickly and transparently in order to rebuild trust in the electoral process.
❗️🇷🇺🧱🇬🇪 - As in Moldova, Russia is trying to destabilize the elections in Georgia.
Although Putin failed in Moldova, the situation in Georgia may be different due to its proximity to Russia and the Kremlin’s financial support for pro-Russian parties.
